The Great Wall of Badaling, a crown jewel of the Great Wall of China, embodies thousands of years of Chinese history and is a world-renowned cultural treasure. The imposing structure was built during the Yongle era of the Ming Dynasty and guards the strategic pass north-west of Beijing. Ancient texts say: “The danger of the Juyong Pass lies not in the pass itself, but in Badaling.” Although the smoke of the beacon has long since faded, its majestic presence continues to proclaim to the world the brilliance of ancient Chinese military strategy and architectural artistry.
A new chapter of international friendship began in 1954 when Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru entered Badaling. The spotlight intensified on 24 February 1972 when US President Richard Nixon visited Badaling. To date, Badaling has hosted 528 heads of state and government from 178 countries and regions. These visits have made the Wall an important window for the world to understand China. Every handshake and every conversation has built bridges for intercultural exchange and added rich chapters to the history of international relations.
Of the two main sections of Badaling, the southern route, favoured by dignitaries, is celebrated as “The Leaders’ Journey”. This route offers a deep immersion into history, with well-preserved walls and watchtowers that show the authentic grandeur of the Wall. While most visitors explore South Tower 7 (S7), the unique “The Solitary Great Wall Experience” opens up the exclusive route from S7 to South Tower 16 (S16).
This 1,245 metre journey is like a trip back in time. Highlights include:
* Guizhou Stele Pavilion: featuring weathered inscriptions that tell stories from the past.
* South Tower 12 (S12): The highest point on the route is 842 metres above sea level and offers breathtaking panoramic views:
